The GTA 6 hacker is currently in the middle of a trial but a last minute twist has just turned everything upside down. What will happen now?
GTA 6 was the victim of a huge hack in September 2022, causing an earthquake throughout the industry. A ton of leaks then appeared on the net, and players around the world were able to discover the game before their time. The hacker meanwhile, a young man underage at the material time, was arrested relatively quickly. It must be said that the latter was already “known” to the police since he belonged to the small group Lapsus$, a group of hackers. With more than a dozen charges on his back, spread over several years, the teenager is currently in full trial, and the trial has taken an unexpected turn.
The lawsuit takes water?
Hacking Rockstar with disclosure of confidential information and blackmail. Hacking of Uber, with approximately $3 million in damages. Theft of sensitive information from more than 5,000 customers during the hacking of the financial company Revolut or even a ransom demand of more than 4 million dollars from a British telecom company… the teenager, now 18, has a CV long as the arm.
Serious charges, too. Only here, after having passed in front of the psychiatrists, it turns out that he is obviously not able to receive his judgment. The jurors will therefore only be able to decide whether or not he participated in the acts of which he is accused. Under no circumstances can the young man be considered guilty or not guilty. He should therefore get away with next to nothing, if it is even nothing at all. His 17-year-old sidekick, on the other hand, will not be so “lucky” and will be tried for his crimes, even if, obviously, he would not have participated in all the hacks.
And GTA 6 in all this?
A very bad news, Rockstar and the other companies which will obviously not be able to receive compensation in spite of the damage, the blackmail and the intrusion in their systems. At the time, take two had claimed that no sensitive data had normally left the nest, even if the hacker obviously claimed the opposite by claiming to hold the source code of the game and GTA 5. The parent company, however, said it would monitor the case very closely and that it would strengthen its security systems very quickly.
As for GTA 6, the game had received bad publicity at the time when the leaks appeared online. Documents and videos of alpha builds that have been heavily criticized on the web. We also remember that many players in the community made fun of the critics by also sharing images of their game under development. However, these leaks also allowed us to learn more about GTA 6. Many rumors were thus confirmed while others quickly emerged thereafter. It remains to be seen if all this will be formalized soon. Rockstar has said several times that it wants to take its time and only show the game when it feels like it’s the right time. The fans meanwhile, are biting their nails while waiting for the sequel and above all, the release date of GTA 6.
